An award-winning, internationally acclaimed company, theater simple was founded in 1990 by two actors who aim to strip the theatrical experience down to its elemental parts: the imagination of the actor and audience, the playwright's words and the director's vision.

theater simple has built a solid international reputation for producing provocative, literate, subversive, entertaining and original theatrical experiences.

No, we are not easily categorized or ‘niched’

We do stuff accessible to kids, but dreamy(or punny) for grown-ups

Stuff for grownups that kids appreciate

Stuff for people who swear and smoke and have adult relationships

And stuff for the thinkers and poets

And stuff for ‘all ages’, whatever that might evoke for you.

Sometimes it happens at the same time

Sometimes it might just for the amusement of a hardy few.

Take a look around. Maybe something might be to your taste. And then again, maybe not.
Visit anyway. What the hell – it’s free.

The Snow Queen

A magical theater event based on Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale.

In THE SNOW QUEEN, Gerda simply journeys out into the wide, wide world to find her friend. It's the adventures along the way that get complicated…

" Listen! This is the beginning. And when we get to the end, you will know more than you do now."

Thus begins Hans Christian Andersen's tale THE SNOW QUEEN, a story of Gerda and her journey to find her lost friend, Kai. There are devious devils, self-absorbed flowers, talking crows, a ferocious robber band, not to mention princesses –
and The Snow Queen herself, the catalyst for the whole adventure.

Five actors + one story of seven parts = chaos, invention and magic….
This summer, hundreds of people followed the site-specific GERDA'S JOURNEY and it's cast of over a dozen performers through parks in Kent, Seattle, and Duvall, or got to watch it at Bumbershoot. NOW, the simpletons have pared it back to its essence, and FIVE actors.

project background
theater simple's original adaptation of THE SNOW QUEEN in 1999 won raves, accolades and awards. (And had to deal with curfew during the WTO riots.) This summer, GERDA'S JOURNEY was a literal park adventure with audiences traveling through the park with Gerda. This sparkling new version of THE SNOW QUEEN is touring to Canada, and Australasia.

Nice things said about theater simple's original production of THE SNOW QUEEN that we dusted off –
*** ONE OF THE TOP TEN PLAYS …bushels of theatrical invention… perhaps the most magical show on offer this season." The Seattle Weekly
***… enchantment few will resist." The Seattle Times
*** "THEATRICAL MAGIC." The Stranger.
*** "AWESOME!" 6th grade boy
